Common Scoter

Description: This is a prominent representative of scoters, some of which can be encountered in our country. It is an averagely sized duck weighing 0.9 to 1.6 kg. It is well distinguishable from other ducks by the solid black plumage in the male, and the dark-brown with lighter crops and bellies in the female. The common scoters are good paddlers, and excellent divers capable of 45-second long dives. They are rather awkward walkers, holding their bodies uplifted, since its feet are set farther to the back.

Habitat: It settles on open lakes and slow rivers. In most of the habitat, common scoters are migratory.
