Tufted Duck

Description: This is an average-size duck with the white wing-long reflecting streak. The cock duck in spring is black-and-white, with a violet metallic sheen on the black head, neck and chest, black back, and a long tuft on the back of the head. They are 40-47 cm long.

Habitat: Habitats differ from densely overgrown lakes with reed-beds and quagmires to small forest lakes and bayous with a thin hem of sedge or other vegetation. Tufted ducks eagerly settle in colonies of gulls and terns, and are common.
