It is a perennial bunchgrass 40-100 cm tall, with triquetrous stems with sharp and scabrous ribs. The inflorescence is thick and 4-8 cm long with hermaphrodite spikes of pistil and stamen flowers.
This sedge is common and widespread in sedge moors, wet and swamped meadows, and shorelines. It flowers in May-June.
