Smooth Black Sedge

Carex nigraIt is perennial sedge 10-40 cm tall with creeping arched rootstalks, branching wide or close. The flower spikes are 1.5-3 cm long, below the staminate.

It is common and widespread in wet and swamped meadows and forests, bogs, and shorelines. In swamped meadows, it may form homogenous beds. It flowers in May-June.
