It is perennial sedge 20-50 cm tall in thick tussocks and tufts. The leaves are 2-3 mm broad. The flower spikes are 1-3 cm long. Its roots have white fibrils. It is common and widespread in wet, swamped and flooded forests, alder woods, bogs and swamped meadows. It flowers in May.
