This perennial plant with relatively thin and branchy stems of 30-100 cm in length has semi-transparent sessile leaves, with a heart-shaped stem-clasping base, 2-5 cm long and 1.5-3 cm broad. The peduncles are up to 6 cm long, and the inflorescences are dense and 2-3 cm long.
It is widespread and common in rivers, lakes, bayous and ponds, often creating considerable thickets in the water – even hindering navigation. It flowers in June-July.
