Common Hedgehog

Erinaceus europaeusHedgehogs are encountered in all districts of the region. They live at the edges of deciduous forests, in shrubs, and close to human settlements. Hedgehogs avoid settling in swamped environs. During the day, they stay in the shelter, in twilight and through the night hunting mouse-like rodents, frogs, and insects. Sometimes, they destroy eggs and nestlings of smaller passerines. Diet also includes fruit and berries. In later fall, with freezing temperatures, hedgehogs hibernate to revive in late April.
