Water Awlwort

Subularia aquaticaThis one-year semi-submerged small – 3-4 cm tall – plant with many awl-shaped pre-root leaves has flower shoots with few-flowered trusses. These smallish white flowers are cleistogamous. The bicuspid silicles are ellipsoidal, with inflated cusps. Each dissepiment contains 4-7 smooth yellowish-brown seeds. This seed-propagated plant flowers in June-July underwater and fruits and disseminates in September.

Habitats include muddy lakeshores, sometimes other water bodies. This rare species is red-listed in Latvia, Estonia and the Leningrad Region.
