Red Fox

Vulpes vulpesThe red fox is a very widespread predator. They mainly inhabit deciduous and mixed forests, their edges, fields, meadows and floodplains. It burrows in slopes of hills, ravines, sandy elevations, and in forests. The species is sedentary when mating, and migratory in the winter. The basic diet consists of mice, frogs, but may also include lizards, snakes, birds, invertebrates and such plant food like berries. The share of hares and birds in the diet is not large. The fox is predominantly nocturnal, but quite often may hunt mice during the day. In 1963, 3516 fox hides were procured, and in 1990 only 105.
